There are many different tools and skills required for different content roles, and these requirements vary by job and over time. Writing technical documentation is a specialised role, and because of this us documenters often have to take responsibility for our own development and learning.
In partnership with the Write the Docs community, we’ll be holding an event on Tuesday 5 June, opening up the subject for discussion. At this mini-conference, you will hear from documentation writers who will share advice on how to develop your career. This is the fourth collaboration between GDS and Write the Docs.
Write the Docs (WTD) is a global community of people who care about documentation. We’ve regularly organise conferences with them to discuss ideas and learn together. Previous mini-conferences include Agile the Docs and API the Docs.
The event is open to anyone who writes content.
Why you should come to Build your Docs career
You’ll have a fantastic opportunity to learn from colleagues across the industry on how they manage their career development. You’ll establish valuable relationships, discuss common issues, and hopefully have fun too!
Who is speaking?
We have 5 confirmed speakers covering the following topics:
- Beth Aitman - What does growth look like?
- Ellis Pratt - How to assess a good technical communicator from a bad one when you're recruiting
- Chris Ward - How to succeed as a technical writer
- Diana Logan - The non-linear career path of a technical writer
- Jon Glassman - The future of technical writing, by technical writers
Where is the conference and what is the format?
The Build your Docs career event takes place at the GDS office at The Whitechapel Building, running from 9:30am to 4:00pm.
The event is free to attend (there is a maximum capacity of 50 guests), and will be a mix of presentations and unconference sessions. Presentations will last up to 30 minutes.
How we share presentations and actions
We will record and share all the presentations given by speakers and actions from the event via email. We may publish recordings of the presentations online, in line with the open access policy of the Write the Docs community.
