StackTech is a cross-government unconference that brings together technologists to discuss common issues and solutions. The event is a great opportunity to network and meet new people. Our third StackTech will be held on 24 October from 09:30 to 16:00 at Friends House, London.
We expect StackTech to continue discussions around important security questions, and popular topics including authentication, cloud infrastructure and sustainable financial models.
StackTech is open to all technology practitioners, including civil servants and contractors, from central government and wider public sector.
Why you should come to StackTech
There are plenty of reasons to join us at StackTech 3. You’ll have a chance to:
- contribute to the agenda on the day
- meet up with various colleagues across government
- establish valuable relationships
- share ideas and problems with people outside of your department
What kind of things get discussed at StackTech?
The unconference is run on Open Space principles, meaning the event is self-organised by the attendees. The sessions are proposed and run by attendees, and those who suggest similar topics can combine their ideas into a single session. The timetable is organised to minimise clashes between popular sessions.
Previous topics have included how to:
- build and benefit from a cross-government technology community
- avoid building a new generation of legacy systems
- make identity and single sign-on systems simple and easy to use
- share code
- recruit technologists
- run successful cross-government services
- use cloud infrastructure effectively
- manage security in your build pipeline
- detect security myths from the truths
While we can’t guess the agenda for the next event, we expect some popular government topics to come up, including how to:
- manage single sign-on
- create sustainable financial models for operating services
- secure in a Cloud First world
- make decisions on cloud infrastructure, the role of “hybrid clouds” and “serverless” architectures?
- develop culture and diversity in the government technology community
- lead effectively in agile development environments
- adapt to emerging technology
Actions that came out of StackTech 2
At the last StackTech we had a dedicated scribe for each session who summarised all the key points.
We shared these notes with all the attendees afterwards to make sure people didn’t miss out on any session, and to also ensure we took necessary actions. For example, publishing a community version of the technical architecture career framework was a direct result of a StackTech discussion.
What if you can’t attend for the whole day?
You’re free to come and go as you please. It’s fine to attend for half a day or even a few hours. We’ll be sharing updates throughout the day.
