Our 5th cross-government API event will bring together our community to share stories, updates and best practice, with a focus this time around on data - the benefits of streaming API data versus delivering batch updates, the importance of open data standards, and the role of data in connectivity.
Confirmed speakers
The full-day event will include a wide range of talks from central government departments and agencies, all discussing their API journeys and major lessons learnt so far.
We’ll start the day with a range of 15-minute lightning talks documenting different stages of API development and practice with:
- NHS Digital talking about open standards and API development in healthcare
- Companies House documenting their data streaming API journey
- Network Rail talking about the role of data in driving better connectivity opportunities for passengers
- iStand UK speaking about how to coordinate a multi-agency response to meet customer needs with APIs
- GOV.UK Notify sharing how to create user-centered API documentation
Attendees will have the chance to ask questions after each lightning talk.
Detailed talks and an unconference
The second half of the event will include DWP, HMRC and Natural England giving detailed talks about the main challenges and successes of their platforms.
The day will end with an unconference session where we’ll hand the agenda over to attendees so they can discuss projects, ask more questions or start a conversation about something they’re interested in.
Previous API community events
Our last API event was on 1 May 2019, where over 60 people from central and local government attended. The event included strategy-focused talks around API platforms, accessibility, mobile, security and data sharing. Our blog post from Rosalie on the 10 things we learned from our API Community of Practice event summarises the discussions we had.
Previously, HMRC hosted an API event in Shipley, where we showcased some of the best practice in API development within central and local government. Other prior events included facilitated workshops, discussions and presentations exploring how to build high-quality APIs in government.
If your department would like to host an event for the API Community, please get in touch.
